Consultation over "studentification"

PolygonThe Government has published a report about the impact that high numbers of houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) can have on an area.  I have been campaigning on this issue since I was first elected in 1992.  Over the years I have often been frustrated by the unwillingness of too many people to accept that some towns and cities have a real problem.  I’m delighted that my constant lobbying within the Government, and the formation of the all-party Parliamentary group I helped to set up three years ago, is now producing results.

Too many HMOs can cause a real problem both for the area’s long-term residents and for the HMO tenants themselves if the accommodation is sub-standard.

The Report sets out a number of ways to help councils to manage high concentrations of HMOs including new planning mechanisms and the adoption of a range of common sense solutions.  I would like to hear what you think about them.

Please could you complete my survey so that I can take your views back to Government ministers?

Studentification survey

1) Should the Government give councils new planning powers to control the conversion of family houses into HMOs?

2) Should the City Council make more use of the powers it already has to set up ‘areas of restraint’? This has established a threshold of 25% per neighbourhood in Nottingham.

3) Should the Universities do more to help by providing more purpose-built accommodation?

4) Should landlords have to register with the Council and have to maintain standards?

5) Should the Universities authorise student accommodation agencies to protect students from bad tenancy deals?

6) Was the Conservative City Council right to withdraw the free rubbish clean-up service for students leaving their accommodation at the end of the summer term?

If there was a general election tomorrow, which political party would you support?

On a scale from zero to 5, with 5 being the highest - how likely is it that you will vote Labour at the next General Election?

Would you prefer a Labour or Conservative government?
